The Province of Lesvos belongs to the category of these insular districts, which base their economy mainly on the exploitation of their local wealth resources.
The economy of the Prefecture is mainly based on the agriculture and manufacturing and the gross domestic product (GDP) per head of population is about 69.1% in comparison with the country's one.

Characteristic of the local economy is the fact that today (in comparison with other Greek islands), at the Province of Lesvos we have dynamic efforts for development which concern various economic productive sections, avoiding the monocropping, which had characterized the economy of for a long period of time and had limited the agriculture to the cultivation of olive trees and vineyards. 
Evidence for this type of development, which starts from the earlier years, is not only the numerous mansions built to Lesvos, but the existence of modern industrial plants, that can be found to both of the larger islands, Lesvos and Lemnos.

So we have a parallel economic development to the island of Lesvos and Lemnos, development which is translated in the development of many enterprises especially in the food and drinks industry.
Particularly there is an enterprise (which belongs to the drink industry) that is classified among the ten (10) first Greek enterprises.

We also have to take into account that the distance of the Province from the main land of Greece was a retarding factor for its development during the period 1950-70.
The modernization of transports and the condensation of the itineraries through sea air, in combination with the decreased economic factor VAT (-30%) and the motives offered by the various laws for development, eliminated that problem, situation which resulted in the following fact:
