LESVOS CHAMBER
Its identity

The Chamber of Lesvos, founded in 1918, is a legal entity of public law and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce. It is the representative body of the Professional and small industrial businesses of the Prefecture of Lesvos (islands of Lesvos and Lemnos), while recently a branch has been created on Lemnos.

Today, the Chamber more than 8.000 business-members (Commercial, Handicraft, Tourist and Professional) and is housed in its own premises at the shopping center of the town of Mytilene.

Administration of the Chamber:
The Chamber, being a professional body, is administered by a Board of Trustees which consists of 41 members.
The Administrative Committee (consisted of 5 members) and its President is responsible for the Board's daily operation.

Staff:
The Chamber's permanent staff consists of 6 people, from whom two have obtained University education (economists). In addition, from the permanent staff, several speak English, German and Dutch.

Collaborators:
Apart from the permanent staff and in special cases, the Chamber collaborates with a number of external collaborators, (individuals or companies), to whom the Chamber occasionally, assigns specific projects.

The Chamber and the European Programs:
The Chamber of Lesvos, as part of its effort to serve its members' needs, has been active towards utilizing the European Community Programs.
This action focuses on the following sectors:

  • Training for Businessmen, members of the Chamber:
    The Chamber has implemented many programs related to the professional training and education of its business members, as well as of its members who work in companies.
    Their activities on the training and education sector, include the ADAPT Community Initiative.
    Moreover, the Chamber participates, as partner, in the proposal which is titled: European Trade Union-possible facilitators of engaging continuing Vocational Training and Organization Development arrangements, which was submitted to the Community Initiative Leonardo da Vinci and approved by the Community authorities.
    ό Initiatives and proposals of the support of the activity of Business - members: The Chamber of Lesvos, participated in the implementation of the program "PROODOS: A Complete Exemplary Experimental System".
     
  • Initiatives and proposals with objective of developing the Prefecture of Lesvos:
    The Chamber participates in the program titled "Expediency Model of the Incorporation of Speleological Ecosystems in the Development of long-term Tourist Activities".
    The program has been incorporated in Life program with a total budget of 110.000.000 drachmas (Community contribution 49.000.000).
    Thus, the Chamber closely collaborates with the University of the Aegean on issues concerning the implementation of various projects as well as with the Company for the Local Development of Lesvos, the Greek Productivity Center, the Organization of Exports Promotion and other public and private sectors.
     
  • EPICENTER:
    The EPICENTER is the result of the implementation of four main European projects undertaken by the Chamber of Commerce of Lesvos in close cooperation with several other local authorities. Its aim is to act as a center of support of entrepreneurship, employment and self-employment.
